I don’t normally respond when tagged. It’s usually not meant as an offense. I’m just kind of forgetful like that. And busy. And normally have my blog topics already outlined for the week. (Yes, I’m that dorky.) However, Jill from Live, Laugh, Blog tagged me on a seven random things meme and it just so happens to “kind of” fit with what I wanted to talk about today.

OMGMYHAIR.

I’m having a hair crisis. So, I thought I would share seven random things about my hair and then include more info about my hair crisis and beg the intrawebz for some advice. And so, here we go.

1. I found my first gray hair at age eighteen. Yes, eighteen. That gray hair is the reason I have dyed my hair all kinds of random colors. My mindset: they’ve got to be covered so why not have some fun with color? That train of thought, of course, worked to destroy my hair once or twice.

2. Every time I broke up with a boyfriend (or, in other words, got dumped), I cut my hair. Seriously. Every time! And since I was mostly the dumpee instead of the dumper, I guess you could say it was a way for me to show some control over something in my life. And it was also a way to “strike back” at the nincompoop who dumped me. I have awesome hair and it was always a favorite of whatever boyfriend I was dating at the time. So, my skewed logic said, “I’ll show them! I’ll chop it off!” Which makes no sense in retrospect. I should have grown it out. And been a hair model.

3. While I’m no longer busy breaking up with boyfriends (read: getting dumped), I still cut my hair when I’m going through major life changes that I can’t really “control.” Got pregnant with BigBrother? Chop. Left work to stay home? Goodbye hair! Got pregnant with LittleBrother? Huge chop-o-rama! I’m letting it grow again. No pregnancies in our future so maybe I’ll have butt-length hair. Doubtful. Change is always just around the corner.

4. I haven’t dyed my hair since BigBrother’s first birthday party. (I had to cover the gray!) And so, with that, my hair is 100% my veryowncolor from root to tip. (Including an alarming amount of gray hairs!) I meant to. I keep meaning to. I actually have hair dye in my bathroom. But this is part of the hair crisis. More to come.

5. In middle school, the trend was to color your hair with those smelly fruit markers. They didn’t show up real great on my really dark brown hair. I was bummed.

6. My only foray into blonde-ish-ness ended up poorly. I got blonde highlights. And went away to college. Which meant that I was showering in different water. And the highlights turned orange. Bad time. Bad, bad time.

7. I had an unfortunate haircut at the beginning of high school. It was very short. And I didn’t know how to style it. So it was basically a boy haircut. And I also had braces. And glasses. And was chubbier than I would be in later high school. And oh, it was just a bad time. FireDad thinks the pictures from this time are funny. I think they are humiliating!

So, what’s this hair crisis?

Oh, Hair.I mentioned part of it. The whole gray issue. I’ve got these grays. An increasing number of grays. An alarming increasing number of grays. I know they need covered because they’re driving me insane. (And don’t say, “No they don’t! Embrace your gray!” I’m not quite twenty-seven yet. I have no desire to embrace gray.) The problem? I’m in love with my 100% natural hair color right now. All those years of dying, I had forgotten about the undertones and great mix of shades I have in my natural hair color. I don’t want to cover it! Sigh.

And the second part of the crisis is the cut. I’m letting a shaggy-cut grow out. And I’m nearing the mullet range in the back. (See picture.) When it’s wet, you can see the mullet-ness. I don’t want to lose too much length but I’m not sure how to cut it right now so that it remains easy (I just dry it right now) but less mullet-y. When I think about it for too long, I’m tempted to get it chopped pixie-style. But that’s not my favorite look for me because my ears? Well, they’re not pixie-style size, let’s say.

And so. Now you know seven random facts about my hair. Gimme some ideas for my crisis!

I’ve had the same hairstylist for at least 5 years, so we know each other pretty well. I had an ultra short spiky kind of thing going on for a long time, but I’m growing it out and now it’s about chin length and really layered. I know the mullet stage you’re talking about. Thankfully, I know my hair girl well enough I just go to her and tell her to cut the mullet off, and I leave looking all awesome.

Sorry, I know that’s not a lot of help. Just wanted to say I know the mullet feeling.

I have no advice, yet. I’ll ask my SIL what she thinks (I’ll email her this picture, if you don’t mind?) since she’s the doer of all things hair. She does an amazing job with my color… I have a few greys and, my natural hair color also had good natural highlights so it used to bum me out. But she colors it in a way to accentuate the highlights in my hair AND cover up the greys. How? I do not know. I shall ask her that too. Or you could, ya know, always move to Colorado. ;)

But, now I am curious about your ears.

Oh boy, have I been there. Every time something crazy happens, I’m cutting it drastically, dyeing it strange colors, etc, etc. I could totally identify with the part about chopping it off when I got dumped! HA! I did the same thing! And then cried for days because I ruined my hair.

I’m also in the process of growing it out. I hate it. It is long and thick (well, should length) and all of the layers are gone. I want a short and sassy ‘do but at the same time I want long and sexy hair. I’m 35, so I am desperately trying to avoid the “mom cut” ya know? I wanna look ROCK AND ROLL and instead I look JUST ROLLED OUT OF BED.

    Sigh.

I know you don’t want to lose the length, but I just went through this. You’ll feel a lot better if you do let your stylist trim up the back a little as the sides (and bangs?) grow down. I just started wearing mine in a bob style even when I didn’t quite have enough fullness. My hair actually felt longer. Now — you should find someone who is really good, and who you trust. My stylist doesn’t actually charge me for a full haircut every time. I’ll go in and have her trim it every 4 weeks. I also dye my hair (I finally gave it — it is very gray) and now I’m thinking I want it back at short ponytail length. You have beautiful hair, so I think it will look cute with a good cut, but it seems you were more content when it was longer. :)

I highlighted my hair until about a year ago. I realized that you could no longer see any of my natural color. I went to my stylist in Feb. 2007 and had her cover my highlights with dark brown and have been growing out the color ever since. I still have a few tips of blonde but mostly dark brown and gray. I decided that I would leave my hair alone for a while since I knew one day the gray would be overwhelming and I would have to cover it.

Your hair is always cute cut short. I am in need of a cut. I think I will schedule one now.

I recently went through the great “grow-out” after the birth of my 4th child (she’s turning one in two weeks). My best suggestion regarding the mullet is to have your stylist keep bringing the length up in the back until it is close to the length of the sides. It doesn’t have to be a huge chop, but if it’s brought up gradually it will still look like it’s styled and you’ll get closer to where you want to be.

As for the gray…I’ve got quite a bit of gray myself, in medium-dark brown hair. When my hair was cut short it was really noticeable, but with it grown out, my own mother actually commented on how “good that color looks on you”, and when I told her my hair was the natural color, gray and all, she didn’t believe me. So I would say keep your natural color and see if the grays are just really noticeable to YOU, or if other people close to you notice them at all.

I agree with Mina, have your stylist shorten the back just enough to make it look progressively layered, I don’t think you’d need to bring it as short as the rest, but just enough to where it’s not mullety - looks like maybe a half-inch would do the trick.

As for the grays, i found my first ones recently and they were my eyebrows so I can’t help there. Infact, I’ll be coming to you to ask you how you did it I’m sure :)
