Every spring, I have a love affair. With a tree.

In our front yard sits an apple tree. Actually, its a splice tree. Half is apple, half is white crab apple. The apple half blooms first, sprouting pink blossoms of love. The white crab apple blooms second, with the flowers having a slight pink tint due to cross-pollination. I love my tree. I love its flowers. I even love raking its apples whilst eight months pregnant in the fall. Oh, wait. Negate that last part. But you take the good with the bad when it comes to love.

I’ve taken photographs all spring (read: April) of the tree this year. And today I present you with a timeline of my Apple Tree Love Affair. I decided to post it on Love Thursday because I really do love this tree. Yes, I love it enough to rake apples (though no more with the pregnant part). I could take pictures of it all day, every day. But alas, with the snow the other day (which no one really “got” even though I posted an amusing title yesterday), the blooms are now all bitten and brown. She’s done her duty for the year though. Take a look.

On April 16th, I captured this shot. The very beginnings of apple blossom blooms.

First Sight

On the 21st, the blooms have grown larger. I am exploding with anticipation for my first real flowers. But not quite yet. Almost, almost!

So Close

.

The very next day, we’ve got flowers! And I am overjoyed!

Flowers!

.

While it wasn’t quite full bloom, it was a taste of things to come. Of course, those things hit the very next day! And man, was the full bloom beautiful this year. On April 23, 2008, our tree was covered in what resembled yummy pink cotton candy.

Yum!

.

I took a lot of pictures that day with the following being one of my favorites. It was snapped in the early evening when the sun hits the tree full on in the front. Made for nice lighting!

Evening Sun Full Bloom

Two days later my birthday arrived. I love trees that are in full bloom on my birthday. Back home on The Farm, which happens to be an hour north in a different state, my parents’ Weeping Cherry tree blooms on my birthday. The Weeping Cherry trees in our area had already bloomed but its as if my Apple Tree (of looove) knows to save the real beauty for my birthday. Add in a stormy looking sky first thing in the morning on my birthday but backlit by the morning sun and you have this picture. Mmm!

Storms

.

And, as it happens, the flowers start to fade in color, wilt, drop and fade away for another year. Of course, then the other side of my tree blooms. But it never fails. We either have a really bad frost. Or, like we had on the 29th of April… SNOW. That’s right. As I said in this post, THE NEIGHBOR’S ROOF IS NOT WHITE. That’s snow, folks. It looks weird with the flowers in the foreground. Sensory overload.

SNOW?!

.

And with the snow, the tree got bit and now is mostly leaves and browned, wilted flowers. We had a nice run this year. I enjoyed capturing pictures everyday. BigBrother liked when the petals fell off. He said it looked as if it was snowing. Of course, we didn’t know that it would actually snow a few days later but, oh, that’s just the way the weather works round these parts.

And so, happy Love Thursday. I look forward to my Spring Love Affair next year. Until then, hit up some other Love Thursday posts.

  1. Beautiful photos!

  2. Count me among the peeps who didn’t figure out that was snow, despite the fact that I knew you had gotten snow. Mother Nature is a bitch for putting an end to the tree loooove too early.

  3. Oh, such pretty colors! We used to have a crab apple tree in the back yard…I miss it, along with the old cherry in a neighbor’s yard, the horse chestnut, too and the old ash. Trees are like friends, really; you miss them when they’re gone and have fond memories of them :-)

  4. Just beautiful. There is nothing like a flowering tree in your yard. We are in a new house so I have to wait awhile to get blooms on any of my trees.

  5. That’s such a purty tree. Wanna know what I love? When it gets breezy and the flower petals begin to fall and blow around like snow. The other day it was dry and breezy and the cherry and apple blossoms were blowing in the wind and making huge piles of pink. The kids were having a blast!

  6. Oh how glorious! Happy LT!

  10. HA! I didn’t know what the heck was up with your title yesterday either. But maybe that’s because the neighbor’s snowy roof looked blue to me. And although I have made a purple snowman (Go Vikings!), I haven’t seen blue snow…so I missed the connection, lol. Thanks for clearing it up today!

Those pictures are SO beautiful! It’s too bad our weather is so erratic these days…I was shocked at how cold it got a few days ago, though we didn’t have any snow where I am.
