We’ve been members of the YMCA for just over two weeks. And, let me tell you, I’m loving it. Loving it! In fact, last week, I made it to the gym six out of the six days that they were open. (They’re closed on Sundays.) We’ve made it a part of our morning routine. BigBrother is really enjoying the time spent with other kids in the child care room and LittleBrother is slowly exiting the Stranger Danger phase that is eight months of age. And it’s just been great to be physically active every day of the week.

But dang. Can’t a Mom see some movement on the scale? I mean, please?

That’s right. No weight loss. In two weeks. None. I’ve been eating healthy (I’m not normally an unhealthy eater) but there were a few special occasion meals thrown in there for good measure. But, really, I’ve had no weight gain either. No loss. No gain. Nothing. It’s almost as if nothing is going on inside my body at all. I got frustrated this morning and exclaimed, “I’d be better off just to sit like a lump on the couch if nothing is going to change at all!” Now, I know that to be false. But, still. Please? Some loss? Something!

Don’t worry. I’m keeping at it. Promise. Because, well, it’s not a total wash.

You see. The scale hasn’t moved. But, well, my pants fit! And my clothes that I started working out in two weeks ago are officially too big! Seriously. They kept falling off of my butt as I tried to make it through my uphill climb on the elliptical. So, I went to the store and bought myself: two new pairs of shorts, two new tops, one pair of pants and a new sports bra. And they all fit! There’s a slight issue of Muffin Top in one pair of shorts but I’ll get there. I swear. At my next weight loss goal (ranging from five to seven pounds to lose), I will buy some super cute pants that I’ve been stalking.

Here are some great things: my endurance is much better than I thought it would be just starting out. Perhaps all that uphill pushing of the double stroller has done me some good. Also, FireDad finally helped me figure out some of the arm machines and now I can use them without feeling like a total loser. Just somewhat of a loser. Because while I may have some decent endurance and my legs are pretty darn strong, uhm, well, my arms? They are not strong. Oh, it is embarrassing.

To be fair to myself, some progress has been made: I’m not totally worn out after an elliptical workout. I’ve also started a brisk ten minute run on the treadmill. Due to a previously fractured ankle, running is not my forte and it never will be. But I like it and I miss it so any running I get is a welcome addition to my workout.

Upcoming challenges: I need to register for a fitness class. But I’m totally intimidated by the teachers. They’re all fit. And I’m seeing no progress, remember. And it’s just been hard to remind myself that we all have to start somewhere. I also need to make sure to do my arm workouts even when other people are at the gym. I know, right? Good times.

All in all, I’m enjoying myself. I look like a dork as I lip-sync along to my playlist but, really, that’s okay because I refuse to make eye contact anyway. Shoot me a weird look! I won’t even see you!

Here’s to some progress next week. Right? (Go see my goals in the comments at GoWorkoutMom’s Monday Goal Call!)

I loved my morning trip to the Y before M was born. I plan to go when M gets older. I miss it.

When I first started working out for real last summer, I actually gained 5 pounds before I lost any. BUT my pants were all getting looser on me at the same time. My trainer attributed it to my metabolism leveling out and muscle gain. It took a few weeks before I saw noticeable weight loss. So you’re definitely on the right track!
    Hooray for you!

I am glad you have comments open because I really wanted to say YAY!! to this. I joined the Y this summer too and I am actually working out three or four times a week and LOVE it. It’s the first time ever for me to use a fitness center. I screwed up my courage and made appointments with the trainers and learned to use the weight machines. I tried a spinner class and hated the loud music they played, plus I couldn’t keep up. I tried Pilates and loved it. The babysitting is the kicker though. I sometimes go on the treadmill just to be by myself :)

Clouds; I discussed this on a private forum but I’ll say it here. My anxiety won’t “let” me ask a trainer to teach me the weight machines. My Husband finally remembered, “OH YEAH! MY WIFE HAS ANXIETY!” And then he walked through some of the machines with me.

You are doing a KICK ASS job, so keep it up. I do know how you feel, though. You would think that riding bike 30 miles a week would make some sort of difference, and every Spring I think it will, but it never does. *sigh* I guess at least we know we are sort of in shape, even if the scale doesn’t agree!

What an awesome experience. You’re benefiting from increased metabolism and muscle strength. I highly recommend taking your measurements (inches of hips, thighs, arms, waist and chest) and focusing on your body composition changes over the scale! You’re already seeing the benefits in your increased endurance and New clothes! You go girl. Throw out the scale (okay, I understand, I can’t get rid of it either), but don’t let it be the up and down for your emotions!

Yep, The fitness instructors are the best. Go give the classes a try. They’ll be motivating and fun!

What got me motivated to join a class was watching one. I’d walk by the windows two days a week and watch these two XL women in a step aerobics class. I then noted that most of the others in the class weren’t perfect or able to perfectly follow the perfect instructor. Anyway, it finally hit me that I couldn’t possibly be worse than some of these people. I tried the class. I couldn’t even believe how much I sucked but it was So. Much. Fun. Now after months I still can’t always add all the arm motions and still get insanely confused when the routine changes, but the class is a blast and I feel great when it’s over. Who knows, watching me suck may be someone else’s motivation for joining the class, lol.
