When I was contacted by Mom Central about the Ringling Brothers Circus, I kind of freaked out. Clowns are scary. I don’t care what you say. They’re scary. But did you know that the circus is much more than creepy clowns falling out of a VW Bug? I was shocked, too!
I haven’t been to the circus since I was around four years of age. I don’t remember much. I think I got a foam finger. But the more I read about the Ringling Brothers Circus, the more I want to pile the kids into our vehicle (not a VW Bug, mind you) and hit the Big Top. I mean, BigBrother would love the animals in general. The better news? LittleBrother can go for free! (Acutally, kids under two can get in for free provided that they sit on a parent’s lap.) Even better? You can get 20% off of your ticket order by using the coupon code MCC at checkout for any of the following shows:
Indianapolis, IN – Sept. 4-7, 2008
Kansas City, MO – Sept. 10-14, 2008
Grand Rapids, MI – Sept. 18-21, 2008
Denver, CO – Oct. 2-13, 2008
Boston, MA – Oct. 8-13, 2008
Cleveland, OH – Oct. 24 – Nov. 2
Chicago, IL – Nov. 6 – 30, 2008
St. Louis, MO – Nov. 6-9, 2008
Auburn Hills, MI – Nov. 12 – 16, 2008
Highland Heights, KY – Feb 27 – Mar. 1, 2009
Cincinnati, OH – Mar. 4 – 8, 2009
I’m seriously considering taking the boys to the Cleveland (ew!) show. It’s right before their birthdays and despite being in Cleveland (ew!), I’m sure we would have a fabulous time. I’ve been feeling that BigBrother has been ready for a live show of some kind for a little while now and, well, as I said in my post about the advantages and disadvantages of being the LittleBrother, he’ll probably love the experience as well. (He likes lights… but I’m not sure about clowns yet.) If you can’t make it to a show, grab a DVD, some popcorn and have a circus night in your own home.
Clown noses optional.

My name is Jenna, aka FireMom. I blog here,

I don’t often get caught up in “causes” but I would urge you to check out how animals are treated and trained in circuse before you decide to support them by attending. Just as I would not buy a puppy from a pet store, I would not go to a circus that has animals in there act.

@Andy: You don’t need to worry about the Ringling Brothers Circus re: animal treatment. Some links for you. Feld Entertainment Animal Care and the Elephant Center. We’re pretty sensitive to animal care as well, however, Ringling Brothers really seems to be on the up and up.
Cleveland isn’t so ew!!!
You’ll probably go on a weekday, won’t you? I was thinking, “Oh, we could go with them!,” but Nate has that pesky thing called school so we’d have to go on a weekend day.
Clowns. I still want a pair of clown shoes for myself. Just for fun, you know.

Thanks for the links Fire Mom! I’m glad to hear that they are a reputible circus and that they take good care of their animals!
have fun, and watch out for rogue clowns!

@Judy: Drop me an email with what would work best for you and we’ll see what we can do. I haven’t looked at FireDad’s schedule during the Cleveland stop just yet so weekend might actually work. Remember: BB has school two days per week now! WOO!
I read Water For Elephants this past summer. Um… you don’t want to read that if you still want to enjoy the circus. Actually, even in the book, they make reference to Ringling Bros as being a good circus versus the weird stuff going on with the other shows. Between that book and the PETA ads, I’m sure Ringling Bros is looking to get people to go under the big top… even if clowns are scary!
