Fire Prevention Week continues. To do my part, as a FireMom, I took fire truck and helmet shaped cookies in to BigBrother’s preschool class yesterday. The Fire Department (yes, FireDad’s department) visited and brought Fire Pup along. This morning I heard BigBrother telling FireDad all about it; how he gave Fire Pup a high five and hug. FireDad’s reply of, “Really?! NO WAY!” was believable. To BigBrother. (In other news: BigBrother was very well-behaved, said my inside source, Fire Pup.)

And so, cookies. We used to have a fire truck, helmet and hydrant. But the hydrant is missing. (Very much like these on eBay. Grab some now!)

I cut the cookies out. Of premade dough. I know. So shoot me.

I did all of this with LittleBrother on my back. He was wearing fire truck pajamas, too, so it was all very fitting.

I learned the hard way that white icing + red food coloring does not make red icing. I had to use a bottle and a half of red food coloring. Win!

Sprinkles are always a hit.

To deliver the cookies, I had to throw LittleBrother on my back and carry two big trays. The icing was still wet so I couldn’t stack anything. So, lesson learned: ice the night before and place in the fridge to harden. Also, as I learned from a friend, the longer you let the red food colored icing sit, the more red it will get. So doing all of this the day before would be the best option. Lessons learned.

All of the kids left school that afternoon with red smears on their faces, dalmatian ears on their heads, smiles on their faces and squeals to their mommies about Fire Pup. It was heart-warming indeed. As I buckled BigBrother into his set, they brought the fire truck back around the block and FireDad was able to wave at BigBrother who was, of course, very excited. (Ahem. As was I because, well, he’s a handsome dude hanging out of that fire truck window.)

BigBrother learned a few things from the firefighter as well. So, maybe this isn’t all about cookies. But it kind of is because we took the leftovers to the fire department and made some guys pretty darn happy about Fire Prevention Week.

  1. What a great day!

The cookies look very cute. Good stuff to know should I ever need to make red icing.

I wore my son on my back for a long time yesterday while I cleaned. He’s horrified of the vacuum, so it’s the only option! It makes everything easier just throwing ‘em on your back, doesn’t it?

  2. @Allison: Ha! That’s the only way I can vaccuum if LB is awake/here, too. (I can vacuum downstairs if he is asleep because they’re on opposite sides of the house.) When I swept the new carpet yesterday before I put everything back in the playroom/office, I had him on my back then, too! YAY BABYWEARING!

  3. The liquid red food coloring you buy at the grocery store never really makes Red when it come to icing and decorations. It does if you turn your cake batter or cookie dough red and then bake it. If you want to do the icing thing again and make it red, check at your local Micheals/craft store that carries Wilton products. The wilton red color gel will actually turn the icing red without turning your friends mouth’s red in the process. Of course sometimes that can be fun, like when you do royal blue decorations ;)

  4. you’re cute. and a good mama. Were they learning about Fire Prevention, or did you just ask the teacher if you could bring them in/have the firemen visit?

I had to make red frosting for a ladybug cake last year. My dad kept telling me it would taste like food coloring or something because I used so much red food coloring. It did not.

You should have never told us the dough was pre-made. We wouldn’t have been any wiser!

  5. and, one more thing. a question for firemom and allison: do your kids not pull your hair when they are thrown up on the back? I guess that I haven’t tried for a few months (and now he lovingly strokes my hair most of the time), but last time it was painful the entire time I was baking. But cute! :D

  6. @sara: It was planned. That’s the older kids’ fall field trip: they walk to the fire department. The younger kids have Fire Pup come to their class. So, I brought the cookies. WOO!

And, no, LB doesn’t pull my hair. However, if I’m wearing a tank top, he drools on my back and licks it. It’s… weird.

  7. Those cookies are so cute!!!
