I’ve been talking about fire safety in different ways all week. Fire Prevention Week shouldn’t be the only time you talk about fire safety, of course. Using the storybooks that I mentioned and others like them is a good way to keep fire safety part of your year round discussion. A book specifically dedicated to fire safety is also a good way to make sure your family knows what to do if a fire emergency occurs at your house.
Enter: Sparkles the Fire Safety Dog by Firefighter Dayna Hilton.
I “met” Firefighter Dayna and Sparkles online shortly after Stop, Drop and Blog was launched. Hailing from Arkansas, they teach their local children about fire safety through their fire department. They don’t stop there! If you have Sprout, the PBS channel for kids, you might have seen a mention or two (or more) about Sparkles this week. They’re serious (and fun) about spreading the message of fire safety.
That’s why they sent us their book to read. I’ll be honest; I love the book. What says firefighter more than a dalmatian on a fire truck? The pictures are bright, vivid and go with the descriptive information on the page. The book teaches children (and parents) to know the sound of their smoke alarm, how to get out of the house (go low under smoke), to have a plan and a preset meeting place outside and, which is a very important thing, not to be afraid of firefighters. One of our adult friends admits that he was afraid of firefighters when he was a kid. Not good! We need to teach our children that firefighters are our friends and that if they show up, they’re only there to help!
If your kid are like mine, they might also like the audio book which includes Sparkles’ theme song! Fun!
I just can’t stress the importance of teaching fire safety at home with your own children. Yes, your schools likely did a lesson or more on fire safety this week. Next week they’ll be on to something else. Your children need to know how to get out of your house in various ways. Your children need to know the sound of your own smoke detector. Your children need to know that you know all of this as well.
And that’s why we’re giving away two copies of Sparkles the Fire Safety Dog, the audio book, some cards with Sparkles picture and a First Alert smoke detector pack. What all is included?
Two winners will receive a copy of Sparkles the Fire Safety Dog book and audio books by Firehouse Dog Publishing. This fun and educationally sound book is autographed by Firefighter Dayna and “pawed” by Sparkles the Fire Safety Dog. To date, the book has been credited with saving the lives of two children and their families. Inspired by her work as a firefighter and by the love of her four-legged friend, Firefighter Dayna set out to create a heart-warming story about Sparkles.
Through the book, children learn the adventures of Sparkles the Fire Safety Dog while at the same time learn valuable fire safety tips, which empower them to stay fire safe in case of fire. These tips include, (a) recognizing the firefighter as a helper and a friend, (b) knowing the sound and purpose of a smoke alarm, (c) learning how to crawl low under smoke, and (d) understanding the importance of practicing a home fire drill using an escape map. Sparkles the Fire Safety Dog is based on the latest fire safety research for young children by Oklahoma State University’s Fire Protection Publications.
The winner will also receive life saving products from First Alert, including a smoke alarm, carbon monoxide alarm, Tundra™ Fire Extinguishing Spray and two-story escape ladder. Prize package value $135.00.

My girls are 4, 7, 9 and 10. We talk about what we should do in a fire, stop drop and roll and have had fire drills in our home before. We havn’t had one since we moved to a new house, so I will be having one here shortly!
I will also sometimes quiz my kiddos and ask them what they would do if a fire started in a certain roon.

My children are almost 4 and 17 months. The older knows about stop, drop and roll. We have also talk about firefighters are helper and not hide from them.
My little ones are 2 and 3 and I’m not sure what they know about fire safety yet. They do know that fire is hot and to stay away from it
My twins are 6 1/2. They know what our fire alarm sounds like (ok, maybe Mommy burned breakfast one too many times LOL), to stay low under the smoke when they exit the house, to crawl backwards down stairways if they have to go downstairs to leave, and to feel a door to see if it’s hot before opening it. They also know what firefighters look like in full bunker gear with SCBA’s and to go towards the firefighter and not to hide if there’s a fire.
We have regular fire drills, and they know to go to our neighbor’s front yard, which is our family meeting place. They know where our fire extinguishers are, and they know we get them checked every year. They know how to dial 911, our street address, and the nearest major cross street intersection. They know NOT to call 911 just “to talk to the firefighters” (yeah, it happened once LOL).

My girls are 2.5, and I’m not sure what they know. But I will certainly be asking them tonight!
Thanks!
My kids are 3, 2, and 1. None of them really understand much about fire safety yet. (They are all special needs to some extent and behind developmentally.) I do stress that fire fighters (and police officers) are nice people and not strangers, so it is okay to talk to them.
Ok, so I don’t have kids, and technically am not entering (although I would LOVE to win that book for my nephew!)
Just wanted to say what a cute post this is. And I’m in love with Sparkles.

I tweeted yet again:)
My son is only 2, so he doesn’t really know much. He does however have a love for firefighters. His daddy is a volunteer fire fighter and he wants to be a fire fighter for Halloween.

that is one cool dog!

My son is 4 and he is crazy about fire stations, fire trucks, and all that kind of stuff. We’d love to be entered in this drawing.
One thing we haven’t talked about a lot, that I learned was escape plans and reminding him not to hide if there is a fire or be afraid of the fireman with all his gear. We took him to a fire station open house yesterday, and he had so much fun trying out ‘stop drop and roll’ and seeing firemen dressing in all their gear. He was really disappointed about not seeing a fire dog though.
Do your boys have the imaginext fire house? My son got this for his birthday and is *crazy* about it. It is probably the only toy he actually plays with and plays with for a long time!
What a great giveaway! I know that it is time for us to replace our fire extinguisher. My children are 11 and 13. They have been learning fire safety for years and know what to do if they are on fire, how to escape our home and where to meet. I would like to think, after all these years of teaching, they know everything they should. With one at 13, it is probably time to teach him how to use a fire extinguisher.
If we win, I will share the book and a few of the other goodies with my nieces who are all under 5, and their parents.
