Subscribe to Our Feed!I don’t know about you but our life here in the FireHouse is rarely still. We’re always in motion. I don’t often photograph anything that, in my mind, qualifies as still life which is the You Capture theme this week. In fact, I had to google the definition to reaquaint myself with the idea as it has been a long time since I have taken an art (non-photography) class.
Still life – One of the principal genres (subject types) of Western art. Essentially, the subject matter of a still life painting or sculpture is anything that does not move or is dead. So still life includes all kinds of man-made or natural objects, cut flowers, fruit, vegetables, fish, game, wine and so on.
As it is fall, my “dead, non-moving” stuff defaulted to pumpkins. We actually hit two pumpkin patches this week. (Pictures of the kids and other living things were featured yesterday at the homegrown pumpkin patch.) We have approximately 20 pumpkins and various gourds on our front porch right now. That’s the joy of a homegrown pumpkin patch (read: free! pick all you want!). I only have a few pictures here.
And then I took some creative liberties. That’s what artists do, right? You see, my Mom bought these great Toy Story boots that are actually slippers for LittleBrother. They didn’t have BigBrother’s size at her store but she couldn’t pass them up. I couldn’t blame her and, thankfully, our store had the appropriate size so that both of my boys are now happy. I had to snap a picture of this still life. I mean, the bottom of the slipper? Adorable!
And then I took one more creative liberty as I snapped this picture after BigBrother fell asleep the first night with his slippers still on his (sweaty) little feet. I call this: life, stilled.

I LOVE pumpkins! And Toy Story!
These shots are really great. The 2nd one is my favorite. Something about it waiting to be finished….it’s cool.

Jodie; I loved that shot, too. Gramps’ actually carved that with his pocket knife while we were at the pumpkin patch, proving that the white pumpkins were easy to carve. He was right. And we left it that way because it made us laugh.
All of them are great, even the “alive but sleeping” one.
Love the sleeping shot…enjoy the still while you can!
Amazing how vast the pumpkins can be in size and shape and even color!

Those boots are ADORABLE! Where did she buy them? (Also, did anyone else think that if little kids had no mouths – a la Mr. Pumpkin – they would be a lot stiller, too? Or maybe just quieter makes them seem stiller.)(And I mean still, not as in dead and un-moving. Because that would just be garish.)
