Oh wow!! That is hard! Lately I have heard my son saying "Oh shoot!" He gets it from me. I know I say it. I know I shouldn't and mostly because I hate when it comes out of his mouth. It is not a nice thing to say. But I do not even know how to deal with it. So, I am simply trying to eliminate it from my vocabulary in hopes that will eliminate it from his. But then it is simply nasty sounding as opposed to on the meaner side and directed to somebody. *Sigh* I hope your interview went well!

I sometimes say these not so nice words to dogs, cars and loud noises that are bothering me. I wince if I hear the kids say it and they know it is a not so nice phrase that isn't acceptable to use. That said, I heard Meg say sh*t the other day and was mildly amused and it brought back memories of the first time I swore in front of my parents. How time does fly!

My girlies are big on the tattling these days. Unfortunately, not so much on themselves. I'm also working with Gracie on actually learning what words we do not say (oh, the list!) instead of just saying blithely afterwards, "Ooops! Sorry!"

You are so not alone in this.

My proudest parenting moment came when Hannah was pushing her bike up the driveway and it wasn't cooperating.

Her: What the H&@% is wrong with this thing!

Daddy: Um, what did you say?

Her: What the H&@% is wrong with this thing!

Daddy: H, h&@% is a bad word and not one we use.

Her: But Mommy says it.

OOPS!

We use 'silence la bouche!' on our house. It does seem to help (like you, "shut up!" is not acceptable whatsoever).

What an appropriate photo. I think it looks a little like Dennis the Menace. lol

I think it's cute he told on himself. It shows he does know better. My niece would tell on herself daily. Still does and she is a Freshman.

My 3 year old also said 'shut up' not too long ago. I don't remember exactly who she was talking to, but it seems like it was her little brother. My stomach sank! I knew I had never said it and I was pretty sure my husband hadn't. Then I also thought of one their movies-maybe? I realized that her grandma tells that to her dogs ALL THE TIME. (With 6 dogs I'm not sure that I can blame her! LOL!) Anyway, I discussed it with my daughter and I haven't heard it again since. I think it's funny that both our little ones language stemmed from dogs barking! LOL!

I like the use of the term ugly words instead of bad words. Shut up is an ugly word here too. It's so hard once they are out in the big world and hearing all sorts of things you wish you could shield them from.

I love the way you handled it too. It's great for the kids to see that we make mistakes too.

Good luck today!
