We got our Girl Scout cookies just yesterday. We experienced a bit of a delay thanks to the Never Ending Winter of Doom. I had two of my favorites last night. Just two. I asked if it was possible to eat just two, considering that two Samoas pack 150 calories and I didn’t want to exceed my daily limit. While it was suggested that I just eat the entire box so that I didn’t have the same problem today, I did manage to eat just two.

Later, as I stared longingly at the box from across the room, I realized something. Samoas are a firefighter’s favorite cookie!

Firefighter helmet wearing Girl Scout! A female firefighter showing girls how to use a fire hose! Hooray for the Girl Scouts!

I then did a little Googling to see if there was any specific reason as to why the Samoas box features firefighting as a profession. During that search, I found a happy little story about a fire station serving as the delivery center for a troop’s cookie order. (And a few other stories that were similar!) I then learned of a special badge, the 2010 Gift of Caring Project, which encourages Girl Scouts to deliver boxes donated by their customers to firefighters, police officers, shelters and other non-profit organizations. I can tell you that FireDad’s station wouldn’t turn down a box of free cookies.

Unfortunately, I can’t tell you why the Girl Scouts chose to use a firefighter themed picture on their Samoas box. They’re two great pictures and I send a big thumbs up to the Girl Scouts for including them because we know that women make wonderful firefighters. I would tell you that we were making the Samoa the Official Cookie of the FireFamily but, alas, FireDad doesn’t like coconut.

Guess I’ll have to eat them, two by two…

Mmm, Cookies

…all by myself. Done and done.

That picture made me drool. I want Samoas. I have managed to restrain myself from buying any Girl Scout cookies this year. So far….

I managed to only eat those two today. I want more. Many more. Must. Refrain.

I have limited myself to a max of 4 Thin Mints a day for years. Otherwise, I’d consume a whole in 1 sitting without even thinking about it. I

LOL. I’m cookie mom for my daughter’s troop. Our fire station also serves as the delivery point for our service unit’s cookies. However, we only have 7 troops in our service unit. We took delivery of 556 cases of cookies on Valentines Day starting at 7:15am.

I actually look forward to delivery day. Our SU Cookie Manager is a Type A+ personality, so she has it organized to the nines unloading, sorting and reloading only took us an hour and forty-five minutes. It is a lot of fun as we stack the cookies in a bucket brigade.

The Gift of Caring project happens every year. Each troop decides where they want their GOC cookies to go. Most, go to Troops serving around the world. Our Service Unit also donates cookies to our safety personnel. Not only for use of their facilities, but for their support of the Girl Scouts throughout the year. They are quick to help us with badge requirements etc.

I like the Samoas too. What is FireDad’s favorite cookie?

I’m the only one in my family who likes the Samoas. (Is that good or bad??) I can never, never eat just two and, therefore, am in awe of your willpower.

Mmmm, Samoas are my favorite too. I wouldn’t have a problem with having a box to myself. I’m also glad to hear you call them Samoas (as we do in New Jersey) – when I was in Massachusetts, they were “Caramel deLites.” Very upsetting. (Also, Tagalongs are Peanut Butter Patties and Do-Si-Dos are Peanut Butter Sandwiches. Seriously – no creativity.)

We were the recipients of The Gift of Caring project last year. WooHoo!!! It was a great surprise, as the troop didn’t tell us they were doing it, until they got here with 13 cases of cookies. Of course, they didn’t last long, as we are a department of 80 members. None the less, we sure did appreciate the gift.
P.S. Your will-power is amazing. I have lost 20 lbs. since jan. 17, so no cookies for me this year….:o(

WOO! So awesome that you were a recipient!!

Also, my willpower struggles more with salts than sweets. But I’ve kept it to two a day. Very proud. I’ve lost 6 pounds since January 1st but had two family deaths and funerals with grief meals following so that has thrown me off course a bit! Such is life.
