The change in weather has brought about more outdoor adventures over the past few weeks. Recently, I walked out the door with both boys in tow. BigBrother took a breath, looked up at the gorgeous blue of the sky and exclaimed…
“BUZZ LIGHTYEAR!”
I was about to correct him. I don’t know why. I usually encourage imagination play and adore the cast of Toy Story
Ah, yes, Buzz Lightyear. I understood in an instant.
The exhaust trail behind an airplane (a contrail for my wordy friends) will never be viewed the same. A few days after that experience, I was driving home from a shopping trip with my mother. I was driving into the sunset; reds and oranges and yellows meeting up with the still blue sky. I eventually counted nine contrails. However, I didn’t call them contrails in my head.
I smiled, glancing in the mirror at the two boys sleeping in their car seats behind me. They’re going to grow, too quickly. Someday they will explain that the contrails are formed by the hot exhaust hitting the cooler atmospheric temperature and making visible condensation. They’ll use big words. It will be all scientific and old. I’ll nod. I’ll add in something interesting. We’ll make a joke. But I’ll always remember that moment where a plane in the sky was a beloved character. I’ll always remember the way my heart soared when I realized what he was talking about; how thankful I was for his point of view.
I’ll always call them Buzz Lightyear trails now. Forever. To infinity and beyond.

Oh I remember my oldest in his Toy Story phase! It’s hard not to “think” like an adult and “correct” what we perceive as “incorrect”. LOL just think, there’s a new Toy Story coming out soon!

For some reason, my little girl always calls groundhogs “foghorns.” Since I find groundhogs relatively useless, I like her nomenclature better.

So cute! Toy Story Mania was my favorite ride at Disney this past year. I think I need the game for Wii. As a side note, my bf and I have a contest every day to see who says “I love you to infinity and beyond” first. That person wins…but if you ask me, we both win. Who wouldn’t want to be loved that much?!
We call it airplane poop…yours is much more easy to use in a conversation though!

Awww, so cute! These are the best things to remember. I’m excited for Toy Story 3 to come out. I hope by then Jamison will be into too. Right now it’s all about the 101 Dalmatians. He has a black and white Matchbox he calls his “35 dalmatians racin’ car!”

You blogging moms of young families will be so happy to have kept written records of moments like this on down the years. I totally would have been a blogger had there been such things when my kids were little. Instead, I wrote letters to share such stuff with friends when time permitted. If only I had copies!
