I’m in a state of panic.
Possibly due to the recent death in our family and last week being FireDad’s birthday and show week, I kind of lost a week of my life. As such, I was shocked as I realized while picking BigBrother up from preschool today that his last day of school is Wednesday.
Panic.
I have no teacher presents. I haven’t even changed BigBrother’s calendar to May yet. I thought I had another week to order some gifts and get organized for our summer. I like to make sure I do one craft per week with the boys (even though I hate crafts) and I also like to make sure I’m still working on things like writing and reading even though school isn’t in session. I have no new workbooks. I have no crafts planned. I don’t even know what the date is today.
More over, I’d like to point out that I always went to school until the first week of June. What is this mid-May nonsense going on nowadays? It’s not just because he’s in preschool. The local schools, before they missed umpteen days due to The Winter of Doom and Never Ending Gloom, were set to let out this week as well. And, no, I didn’t walk to school uphill both ways through three feet of snow. But I wasn’t ready for school to be over.
Needless to say, today’s plans have now been scrapped so that I can come up with teacher gifts (these?), get BigBrother his end of the school year present (which isn’t available for super fast shipping from Amazon, ugh), get the ingredients to whip up some end of the school year cupcakes (instead of my rainbow cake), find some workbooks and generally get my Summer Butt in gear. Oh, and our library books are overdue as of Friday. For Pete’s sake, I haven’t even gone summer clothes shopping yet (though he has clothes that fit; he’s not naked, I promise). I’d be excited about the thought of summer vacation if my kids slept in (#41) but now it just means that I’ll be up at 7:00 and it will be hot outside. Swell.
That said, we’re really going to make the most of this summer vacation. Why? Both boys go to preschool in the fall. I may not be ready for summer break due to a lack of organization. But I’m so not ready for them both to be in school. Where are my babies?

I’ve been painfully aware that Friday is Charlie’s last day of Pre-K. Down here we start early, Aug. 23rd, so kids get out early. I’ve already got Charlie booked for 3 different weeks of VBS at 3 different churches. I work until 12noon & Hubby starts work at 10am (both of us from home) so Charlie will have to fend for himself for 2 hours a day. PTL for DVD’s!
I try to keep Charlie busy as well during the long hot summers. Don’t forget story time at the library! We’ll do some geocaching as well as the pool & swimming lessons. Definitely need to get some more workbooks though to keep practising sight words & writing. I hate crafts too but we’ll do some sometime I’m sure.
Teacher present I’m thinking I will flake out on. I’ve not been happy with his teacher plus we just had Teacher Appreciation week which I contributed to a week long gift fest.
Already got summer clothes as the child has had a growth spurt & outgrew last year’s shorts & tshirts last month. Plus no uniforms anymore so I will have to get some more regular clothes eventually.
My only child will be starting Kindergarten in the fall!! I am so not ready for a Big Kid; I miss my sweet little boy already.

I don’t get this school-out-in-May-then-back-in-August thing in America, here school ends at the end of JUNE and summer vacation lasts until after Labour Day.

How much coffee have you had this morning?! The great thing about summer is that is is RELAXING remember. The kids will have fun and it will be great…I promise. Have them make letters with FireDad’s shaving cream, go on a ABC hike in the park, gie them ice cream for breakfast. It will be the best summer ever!
Wow, that IS early to get out! Here in northern NY school doesn’t let out until June 23 and they don’t go back until September. When I was in school (in WV) we went through the end of May. I think our last day was around June 6 most of the time. I wonder what the thought is about letting them out earlier?
Those teacher gifts are CUTE! I wish I got something like that, I love personalized things and I have nothing with my name on it.
You’re right, that IS early. Although that said, here in Texas we’ve always gone from mid-August to end of May. My school ends next week. And I’m kind of in shock that it’s almost over already.

Hi there,
Can you recommend workbooks for a 20 month old? What do you use for your boys/where do you get them? My son loves ABCs, numbers, etc. and besides books and puzzles I am not sure what to do next with him.
Thanks for any recommendations you have.
Kristina

YES! The Usborne First Learning Workbooks are my favorite for introduction to the thought of workbooks. I also used to print a lot of stuff off (coloring pages/etc) for BB at that age. I usually buy my Usborne workbooks through this link.
Mid may? WOW! I always, ALWAYS went to school till the last Friday in June. It sucked! Liam’s school finished 2 weeks early, so he’s out June 11. I couldn’t imagine Mid May.
I LOVE the crayon letter idea, and I think I may borrow it. I might change it up to something that Liam can do on his own. Our dollar store sells shadow boxes, so he could paint the frame and make the letter out of something. Thanks for the idea!

We get to go next week still, but ACK! TEACHER PRESENTS??? You can tell it’s my first year as a preschool mom! I hadn’t even THOUGHT!
Family Fun Magazine’s March issue had rainbow cupcakes as the Treat of the Month on the back page – thought of your rainbow cake. Let me know if you want the recipe! (For future use, or if you hadn’t decided what type to make this week).
I ordered a book from Scholastic but haven’t read it yet – I love Usborne books, and this is Usborne’s ideas or summer activities…
And, thanks to you, I downloaded the Couch to 5K schedule last week and began it yesterday. If this crazy rain ever moves out, I hope that I’ll be spending much time running alongside my son’s bike (and biking some with him) to get ready for my 5K deadline in August… Even in the heat, while you’re wilting!

You sound about as manic as I feel! This week is full of hugely important meetings at work (for which I am responsible), next week my baby sister is here, the week after that is the last week of school (nope, no gifts yet here either – but thanks for the great idea!), then the Scottish Festival, dashing off to Philly for my sister’s surgery, and then a huge event at work. So. Really. It’s almost July and I’m feeling your panic!
