I tried something new at the playground. I landed my helicopter and sat on a bench.

The boys ran by. Sometimes they were tough.

Sometimes they were smiley.

Sometimes they chased each other too quickly up the steps. LittleBrother tripped on his own feet and fell in some mulch. BigBrother climbed up a piece of the toy that made my heart skip a beat with fear. I may have told BigBrother to let LittleBrother also be Spiderman and thus be on the same team. I may have also let out the occasional “be careful” or “stop shrieking.”

But, unlike in previous years, I sat still. In fact, I did something I’ve wanted to do at the playground for…ever.

And we all survived. Who knew?

  1. Yay You! Glad to hear everyone survived.
Hubby frequently accuses me of not paying attention to Kiddo on the playground because I always have a book with me. So I have helicoptering in absentia.

  2. The title of this post is so cute. I made me giggle. I try not to hover too much with my toddler, but I do watch him like a hawk from my bench. It’s like helicopter sniping. If that makes sense. I don’t think it does.

Anyway, congrats on taking some book time at the playground! I’m sure you’ve been longing to do that for quite some time now.

That’s awesome, though. A big milestone for everyone to just…be. Good for you (all of you).

  4. As one helicopter mom to another, I salute you….

or I will, as soon as you put on some elbow pads and get away from the road. ;)

  5. And doesn’t it feel good? I love the independence of my boys. You should pat yourself on the back for doing a good job of raising them to discover their own fun, scrape their own knees, rely on each other for play. Enjoy that book!

  6. This sounds so wonderful!

  7. I remember that feeling :) It is so wonderful to be able to relax a bit and not hover as much! It was that way at the pool this summer. I have gotten so much reading done. YEAH!

(What’cha reading? Can’t quite make out the title. I just finished Arthur Phillips’ The Song is You and *highly* recommend it.)

  10. The playground is one of my best places to get a little reading in. I keep a book in the truck just in case we make a stop at a random park! The older boys rarely need help anyway, other than please push this vaguely merry-go-roundish thing around mom, but the 2yo does force me to make occasional eye contact, lol. Glad you got to enjoy the book at the park experience finally!
