We gave away a copy of Fireboat in 2008. As yesterday was September 1st, we broke out our copy off the paperback shelf and read it. BigBrother asks for it at random times during the year, but I make certain to pull it out during the first eleven days of the month of September. I always forget how the book makes me feel, and I got choked up near the end of our read through last night.
Our copy is kind of well-loved now. I just had to tape up one page with some packing tape due to a 3/4 page rip. The tips of the cover are curled. I don’t know if this book will last forever, but we’ll keep up with tape and general maintenance in hopes that it can be passed on to the next generation.
FireDad said to me last night, “Why didn’t you go and find the fireboats when you were in New York City?” I kind of blinked at him, tried to think of something witty to say and came up empty handed. “I don’t know. Good question. It would have been fun.” He has now decided that we need to make a trip specifically for fire boat spotting. I’m down with that idea.
I bought a new book to read with the boys this year, September Roses. I hope it’s as good as On That Day: A Book of Hope for Children
which I’ve blogged about before. Add that to Fireboat and we have three age-appropriate books to keep the discussion going in our family… even when I don’t quite feel like keeping the discussion going myself. That said, I just ordered myself a book which I plan to read before 9/11 as well. Last year I read Bikeman
, an epic poem, on September 11th. Hard, worthwhile, gut-punching read.
We’re giving away another copy of Fireboat this year. Leave a comment on this post about how you discuss the events of 9/11 with your children for a chance to win. This giveaway will be live through September 8th at 12 noon. I will contact the winner via email for shipping information and place the order direct through Amazon with two-day shipping in hopes that it arrives on time. You may share this giveaway on twitter for an extra entry, just be sure to leave a separate comment with your tweet link.

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.

With the kiddos being little, I haven’t really thought to share with them about 9/11 yet, but maybe I’ll try to explain it to them this year.

I live in NYC with my husband & 3 sons, 3,6, & 9. Having watched the whole thing out the window when my oldest was a baby I’m surprised how hard it is to talk about. I worry that the boys will be afraid, we live in a tall building on the 35th floor. But I did read Fireboat to my oldest when he was much younger. I had no idea what was coming and ended up crying. But it is child friendly and well written.
I would love to hear what you have to say about the new book you bought. This year when the kids look out the window and see the lights I would like for them to understand a little more about what it means.
This post made me sniffle a bit! Up until last year we didn’t say anything about 9/11. It was really just too raw a topic for me. Cowardly of me, but true.
Last year our daughter’s 3rd grade teacher started the dialogue with the class on Day 1 of school. For good reason. She’s from NYC and shortly after 9/11 decided she needed to do something to honor the fire departments there. So she picked a department and had the class send them cards and handwritten notes. Every year since she has kept up the tradition with the same department. Last year the kids had the opportunity to call the chief on 9/11 and talk with him. They prepped for 2 weeks, writing questions and thoughts they wanted to share. Each kid had an opportunity to ask questions or share. It was AMAZING!
Then, around Thanksgiving, the class gave the local fire department a big turkey dinner and served it to them for lunch as a thank you in honor of everything they do every day.
I’m not sure what we’ll do this year (nothing quite as big!), but I will talk to her about it and let her share. Even if it will be so hard.
Our littles are too little as well, but getting to the age that we will need to address this. 3 yo son has started classifying people as good and bad already. I am so not ready for this. Glad to have someone pointing out the good ways to deal with these types of issues. Thanks for the giveaway and more importantly the suggested reading!
We would love a copy of this book. I haven’t discussed 9/11 with my son yet. I’m sure he is old enough to understand some if it now. But he has such anxiety I almost hate to bring it up. We have talked a lot about the Muslim religion this past year!

It’s so hard to explain to your child such a tragic event. That’s what’s most difficult for me. I can’t even imagine how hard it would be to explain to your child that you’ve lost a husband or a wife in this horrible occurrence.

We haven’t discussed much yet, since last year Greta was just 15 months old. Maybe this year we will start to talk about it. I LOVE books that help out

The twins are still too young to understand much of anything about 9/11. However, being that we are a proud military family, I definitely plan to tell them about Daddy being in the Marines during and after 9/11. I want them to understand who our real heroes are – firemen, police, military, etc. Sacrifice is to be honored. I hope to find a way to teach them that.

We haven’t discussed 9/11 yet, but it would be nice to have a book to read when the topic does come up.

How convicted I am right now. I have never done anything about 9/11 with my kids. Meg was 2 when it happened.
Maybe this book would be a good intro into the topic. With two of my kids with PTSS issues, I have to tread lightly here.
Thank you!

Now, I have to go look at all the books you mentioned up there. We have been talking with my almost six year old son about September 11th for years. We are originally from downstate and we still have family there. We go into Manhattan every year the day after Thanksgiving and we take the ferry and we always discuss the skyline when we go. Then my son will mention it and ask questions sporatically. Especially whenever we fly on a plane. We discuss it when it comes up and we discuss it yearly when it becomes that time of year.

New to your blog and love it already! Mom of two little ones with a firefighter husband myself, so it’s a fun read!
Like many others, haven’t broached that subject yet (oldest is 3, youngest 4 months), but really want to. What a a great book to begin!
I haven’t talked with my kids yet, although the time is here. It’s so hard to broach the topic of the possible dangers of firefighting when that is what Daddy goes off to do every third day. But, they are 4 and 5 and soon others will mention it to them. It’s SO HARD. I do love the book ideas – I think we will look them up.
thanks for sharing
