I wrote earlier this month that FireDad would be working on Christmas Day. We were planning a wonderful Christmas Eve for just the four of us. I was looking for a great dress to wear and finally found one. 24 hours after I ordered that dress, plans changed.
He’ll be home for Christmas!
Another firefighter needed to have Christmas Eve off to be with his son, so my husband switched with him. And, yes, you read that right: He’s now working on Christmas Eve. At first I was slightly bummed. Then I had a moment of sheer panic where I freaked out about the whole bed-magic thing. Turns out that he’ll be leaving the station for a little while on Christmas Eve night to help the magic take place. I started breathing again.
So all four of us — weather permitting — will be traveling to The Farm to spend Christmas with my family. That’s never happened. I’m over-the-moon excited about it. As I said yesterday, I haven’t been home on Christmas Day since BigBrother was one. I mean, look. (Note: My Mom is not a photographer.)
But, that was the year my parents got BigBrother the Little Tikes Fire Truck Cozy Coupe.
Ha! Anyway…
And FireDad wasn’t there. He got to celebrate our Christmas via flickr. Of course, I feel even worse about that now as he never experienced Christmas morning breakfast with Papau. But, as I’m learning, the creating of family holiday traditions has an ebb and a flow and a general need for flexibility. We were really working on a great Christmas Eve. And now we’re not. I was going to Pennsylvania by myself. Now we’ll all be together. I am thrilled that we get to spend the day together.
I am so excited. I don’t know what I’m doing for Christmas Eve yet, but I’m sure we’ll create another family tradition. We’re continuously learning how the fire life keeps us on our toes. I think we’ve gotten pretty good at staying flexible, rolling with the changes as best we can.

So LB is getting a big kid bed too? How cool. I love the bed-magic thing. Too bad we moved Charlie ages ago to a twin bed.
Santa wraps his presents in Santa wrapping paper only at our house. No other presents have pictures of Santa Claus on the wrapping paper.

Yes. With fire truck bedding. WOO! I’ve wanted to move LB eighty-billion times from the toddler into a twin during the past year. He’s been in a toddler for eons as he’s a climber. But I wanted the magic.
I repeat: Santa doesn’t wrap. (But it’s okay if he does at your house. Heh.)
Yay! In FireMan’s four year’s as a full-time firefighter, we’ve been fortunate that this is actually the first time that he’s had to work Christmas Day. And I am not looking forward to it. But that means I totally get your excitement, and even your moment of panic over the change in plans – even though it was a good change! Been there!

We had three years together on Christmas Day because of the Leap Year. So, we were feeling a little spoiled!
Yay! Hooray for Christmas togetherness. Also, I know I failed at the last ModCloth attempt, but again, if you ever want something, let me know. 60% off and my friend can usually get it delivered to her the same day she places the order. Merry Christmas!
