A conversation from a few days ago went something like this:
BigBrother: Are a grown up and an adult the same thing?
Me: Yeah. Wait. No.
That conversation was followed up with a peppering of questions on grown ups and adults today.
BigBrother: So how many years does it take to be a grown up and an adult?
Me: Well, when you’re 18 years old, you’re an adult — but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re a grown up.
BigBrother: So how long does it take to be a grown up then?
Me: It depends. It’s based on the maturity of the individual.
LittleBrother: What’s maturity?
Me: Maturity is based on things like responsibility and making good choices and lots of other things.
BigBrother: But everyone makes mistakes.
Me: Yes, everyone makes mistakes, and that’s okay.
LittleBrother: Do you make mistakes, Mommy?
Me: Yes, even Mommy makes mistakes.
BigBrother: Like, if you went running on a day that it was too hot out. That would be a mistake.
Me: Yes. Yes, that was a mistake. Thanks for pointing it out.
Today I made a bad choice and ran in too hot temperatures in too much humidity with too much sun. I thought I had enough water with me; I did not. I thought I would be okay; I was not. The whole experience was scary and awful and I’d like to never repeat that kind of mistake ever again. I suppose today I learned, the hard way, that I am not invincible out there on the trail under the hot sun. Not even a little bit.
But I also learned that slipping into a cool, silky cotton skirt after a ridiculously awful run is a therapeutic treat. Not as much of a treat as the bed will be later, but you know.
