Mom’s Breakfast Club: Back-to-School

BlogHer Reviewer We’ve only been back to school for a week and a half now, but we’re falling into a familiar routine. It wasn’t too difficult, but we are learning a few things… the hard way. As per usual for our family.

  • BigBrother needs a later bedtime. That’s not usually what you hear about back-to-school, is it? Normally everyone is talking about reverting bedtimes back to pre-summer hours. The truth is that we’re pretty standard with bedtimes whether it is dead-winter or mid-summer. As he’s been getting older, he’s been transitioning into a need for slightly less sleep. He’s also not miserable come bedtime hour as he was when he was younger. As such, we’re pushing his bedtime back a bit… which makes for an interesting bedtime for LittleBrother who still needs the earlier bedtime.
  • I have to wake up earlier. Ugh. If I wait until BigBrother wakes up between 7:00 and 7:30, I am behind and rushing. If I wake up at 6:30, start the coffee and get some morning email and work out of the way, I can jump in the shower while he is eating and feed LittleBrother who usually wakes up while I’m attempting to shave my legs. Not bad. It’s been an adjustment, but I’m getting used to it.
  • Pushing a bigger breakfast. We’re finding out that they’re using much more energy in the morning hours at school. They are starving come lunch. In addition to having oatmeal or cereal in the morning, we’re pushing a banana or a piece of peanut butter toast or some other fruit (melon is SO good right now). I think it’s working. I’ll get back to you on that!

The truth is that we’re doing well. I’m enjoying the “free time” while they’re at school to run errands, work without interruption or just sit on the deck and read. It’s been wonderful. Hooray for back to school!

  1. Really nothing special. My daughter has no problem with getting up earlier. That’s all!

  2. very cranky!!

  3. I homeschool, and we have been adding subjects in gradually. Next week we’ll be up to full speed.

  4. I’m still trying to get used to it getting dark earlier! I think that’s the hardest transition for me.

  5. We are a family of 9 and the need to be organized. so transitioning is easy when everyone is on the same page. Schedule, pre plan, and sharing responsiblities is the way we operate.

  6. The transition has surprisingly gone well! A little trouble the first few days, now things are getting back into the swing of things.

  7. I in particular do not like to wake up early, but my daughter doesn’t seem to mind.

  8. I work all 12 months for the school system but the summer months are really slow and casual. At first it is nice but eventually I am ready for everyone to come back to get in the swing of things–so I kind of look forward to the start of school.

  9. It’s a big challenge and I’m glad we’re doing good so far. We started the routine and schedule at least a week before school started, it helped a lot.

  10. It hasn’t been too hard, just lots of sleep is needed!

  11. My daughter has to get up an hour earlier this year [6:30] which is really rough on all of us, as none of us are morning people! But we’re working on getting things prepped better the night before to make things go more smoothly. It’s a work in progress. :)

  12. I’m a teacher and I love going back to school every September. Every September is a brand new start – for both the students and for me. How many jobs let you start with a clean slate every year? I really love that and use the opportunity to put my best foot forward and my goal is to do an even better job than the previous year.

  13. Some years are better than others. The older they got the better. New clothes always helped alot!

  14. The transition has been pretty good. My kids are super excited to go to school, but they are exhausted at the end of the day, so we have moved bedtime up a bit to help during this transition time.

  15. A few weeks before school we start getting them prepared for school. They go to bed earlier and we reinforce chore charts…they love checking chores off (we place their chores in a clear plastic binder. Each week that wipe the check marks off, and start again!
