Mom’s Breakfast Club: Favorite Cereals

This is sponsored content by BlogHer and Kelloggs.

BlogHer Reviewer We have a very varied group of favorite cereals in our house. Ignoring oatmeal, the ultimate favorite and in which blueberry is fought to the death for, we have a few “go to” cold cereals that we really like.

I should note that I was raised in a house in which super-sweet cereals were not permitted. At all. I went away to college and decided I’d balk at the way I was raised and eat all of those cereals. As such, we generally have one box of family-approved healthy cereal and one box of “fun” cereal. I like the balance. So do my kids!

Eating Cereal

  • Rice Krispies – In fact, my kids are doing better than I was at their age. They haven’t yet discovered you can sprinkle sugar on top. Win for us.
  • Variations of O-cereals – Cheerios, Apple Jacks, Honey Nut Cheerios. The latter two fall into the more “fun” category.
  • Corn Flakes or Frosted Flakes – Obviously one is less fun than the other, but they do like them both.
  • Frosted Mini Wheats – A big, big favorite. For me, too.
  • Peanut Butter Crunch – Our “ultimate” fun cereal. Mostly for FireDad.
  • They’ve had some other kinds over the years, but they didn’t fly well. Remember that my oldest son is dealing with texture issues and, as such, shies away from certain things in his cereal. Marshmallows? Not so much. Raisins? Not going to happen. He does like when I cut up bananas for Rice Krispies, Cheerios or Corn Flakes, but he’s not going to eat strawberries, blueberries or, really, anything else on his cereal. LittleBrother will eat whatever you put in front of him — thankfully.

BigBrother has just started to notice that there are gimmicky cereals out there, too. Thankfully, he doesn’t seem to have the gimmies about any of them just yet. Hopefully I can teach him the difference between healthy but fun and the gimmicky-unhealthy cereals on the market without making him think I’m a big meaniehead. I have hope!

  1. My favorite but rarely bought is Lucky Charms. I generally buy Cheeries or Honey Nut Cheerios or Frosted Mini-Wheats. Occasionally I get Fruit Loops or Raisen Bran. I love oatmeal and Malt-O-Meal myself. I also buy only the generic versions of these cereals, except for the Malt-O-Meal.

  2. My guilty cereal is lucky charms, but I rarely eat it. I love frosted mini wheats or Life. I’m pretty simple! In tastes that is…in brains I’m really, really smart :)

  3. We also love the O cereals, specifically Honey Nut and the new Chocolate Cheerios. I know, maybe it’s not “healthy” but it is delicious! :)

  4. Mini Wheats!! (and even more so since the catchy commercials get stuck in my head)

  5. Our favorite cereal is Honey Bunches of Oats with Almonds. We were all out this morning and my son decided he’d rather skip breakfast than eat Cherrio’s. :)

  6. After years of raising our now-long-grown-and-gone sons on the relatively healthy versions of cold cereal (Cheerios, etc) I have finally discovered the virtue of steel-cut oats. Cooked a few servings ahead of when needed, served hot or cold with fresh fruit, milk and sometimes nuts atop it…I can practically feel my cholesterol dropping with every yummy chewy bite :-)

  7. I eat a bowl of Frosted Mini Wheats before work every morning.

  8. I love Special K….seriously love all the different kinds!

  9. I love Life Cereal but I think one of my more recent favorites form Kelloggs is the Special K Red Berries. Yummy :)

  10. I liked Apple Jacks and Froot Loops as a kid but now I eat healthier cereals like Nature’s Path and Kashi.

  11. I always loved Tony (i.e. frosted flakes) :)

  12. We love Special K’s fruit and Yogurt cereal.

  13. We love Raisin Bran around here. And growing up I loved Apple Jacks too.

  14. I always liked Frosted Flakes and now my family loves it too.

  15. My favorite cereal is Cracklin’ Oat Bran.

  16. When I was pregnant I ate a lot of Multigrain Cheerios. Now, we go for the the plain old fashioned Cheerios for the baby. I like Lucky Charms every now and then.

  17. We are a total Rice Crispies family!!! Eat them for breakfast and add some marshmellows for a yummy treat.

  18. I’ve always loved Frosted Flakes and Froot Loops and now my kids love them too!

  19. Rice Krispies was a favorite as a child….loved the ‘snap, crackle, pop’. Also, Rick Krispie Treats are a regular snack/dessert, and it’s pretty easy to make.

  20. Our favorites would have to be Frosted Mini Wheats with Raisin Bran Crunch a very close second!!
