Mom’s Breakfast Club: Our Morning Routine

BlogHer ReviewerSomehow my husband and I — nightowls — conceived children who happen to be morning people. They wake early. They love mornings. And, man, do they love breakfast. As such, over the years we have figured out a routine that works for us, even when my husband and I are at our most groggy.

  • 7:00am, on the dot — BigBrother appears next to our bed. I tell him to go to the bathroom as I roll over and pull the blanket over my head.
  • 7:01 — BigBrother is back in our room, asking for breakfast. I tell him to go in the kitchen and pick his spoon.
  • 7:02 – 7:10 — I fumble around our bedroom and bathroom, trying to find my glasses and my robe while silently wondering if our children are really alien life forms.
  • 7:11 — I get BigBrother his breakfast while simultaneously starting the coffee. Because I have octopus arms.
  • 7:15 — LittleBrother walks into the kitchen with a smile on his face, announcing, “IT’S A BEAUTIFUL DAY!” No, really. He does this. WHO ARE THESE KIDS? I send him off to the bathroom and start his breakfast.
  • 7:20 — They ask for additional breakfast food (fruit, a piece of toast, a plain waffle), because apparently being that cheerful in the morning works up a big hunger.
  • 7:30 — They’re off to the playroom while I’m left nursing my coffee.

It’s really a lovely routine, minus the fact that it happens in the morning. This is when they are their most cooperative, most happy to do whatever I ask of them. And, because they wake so early, we have no trouble with the morning rush to school once school starts. I know this will change by the time they are teenagers. Or, rather, I hope it will change. I’d like ten more minutes of sleep.

DSC_0282Because they are their most cooperative in the morning, they’re pretty going with the food choices. We offer a range of choices, but their favorite is oatmeal. I count this is a parenting win. Plain oatmeal with honey is acceptable, but one of the boys really likes any variation of blueberry oatmeal (homemade, store bought). Other acceptable foods are:

  • Pancakes. These are a treat. See also: I hate mornings.
  • Cold cereals: (Rice Krispies, Frosted MiniWheats & Apple Jacks are favorites).
  • Waffles. Eggo only. Don’t try to trick them. And plain. (Not even with our homemade maple syrup from my husband’s grandpa. Our kids are… weird.
  • Eggs. Of any kind. Especially if my husband decides to treat me with a special breakfast. Then they want a bite. Meaning all of it.

But, mostly, we stick with oatmeal and the occasional double of toast or a plain waffle because they like it, it makes our routine work easily and, as I said, they’d probably eat the foods that they refuse to eat for supper if I served them for breakfast because they’re just so darn happy in the morning. Craziness!

  1. Breakfast is one of my favorite meals, so I always try to make time for it. I usually have a caffe lattle and maybe some Kellogs Special K cereal with soymilk.

  2. Because my hubby and I are both in school our morning routine is: Wake up, shower, eat breakfast (cereals and milk or fruit smoothie with a piece of bread), prepare a sandwich to bring for work/school. Then go to school/work.

  3. My husband and I aren’t morning people, so we usually miss breakfast. So we eat it for dinner sometimes!

  4. Now that my oldest is back in school it seems the little one’s wake up a lot earlier than they did all summer. I like to keep pop tarts and cereal on hand for those mornings I can’t function! I am NOT a morning person, but my 2 youngest are! On the weekends I will treat the family to homemade pancakes or waffles.

  5. Now that school has started, my morning routine is to get up, get the kids up, pack lunches, make breakfast (read: cereal or pop tarts) and get the kids to school by 8. Then its back to bed for me, LOL!

  6. We all roll out of bed and serve ourselves cereal or poptarts. I couldn’t provide a timeline other than, last minute

  7. My husband loves his cereal and sometimes I eat some fruit at work!

  8. For breakfast on weekday-Greek yogurt, cereal (several choices), soymilk (different flavors) and oatmeal
    Weekends, add pancakes or waffles.

  9. I have a quick breakfast and then head over to the kids I watch and help them all get breakfast! They usually each like something way different which is kinda annoying and high maitenance I think..

  10. We usually have cereal and occasionally we have eggs and toast!

  11. I work second shift, and im a late night person. So i wake up, shower, and grab some cereal, get ready, and i’m out the door!

  12. We get up when the alarm goes off….if we sleep a little later, hitting the snooze button too many times, we have cereal with fruit.
If we get up on time or on the weekends I make yummy omelettes.

  13. Breakfast is easy. Kids fix themselves a bowl of cereal. If they are lucky, I will fix toast, a frozen waffle, pancakes or eggs.

  14. I usually just grab a coffee and english muffin in the morning, but I love to take it outside in the garden:>) Thanks for the chance at a great giveaway!

  15. On weekdays, everbody fends for themselves. Cereal, protein bars, shakes (who knows about the oldest and fast food takeout- I prefer not to know!!!).
On the weekend, I prepare the full course- Bacon suasage, biscuits, pancakes, home fries – whatever they want!!!!

  16. Coffee and lots of it. Thanks for the chance to win.

  17. 6 – wake up
6:05 -crawl out and go check e-mail, weather, facebook, blog, etc. Shuffle around, maybe do a few dishes.
    by 6:30 – exercise!
    7 – shower, get ready
8 or later….out the door to work
8:30ish – eat yogurt and fruit at work. Sometime PB&J because I love love love them in the morning! So good. :)

I love cereal but hate eating right after exercise, so I usually get to treat myself to cereal on saturday and sunday. Sometimes I’ll even have it for dinner. It’s a perfect summer dinner-light and just what I have wanted all day anyway! Hah.

  18. I love making pancakes on saturday mornings for our family of 6. It feels so good to all be able to enjoy a yummy meal together:)

  19. Put the bowl on the table, pour the cereal, pour the milk. I keep it quick and simple.

  20. We are a grab what’s available kind of family, typically ceral. As a homeschool Mommy I always had grand plans of homemade meals three time a day, but the reality is that isn’t possible for our family and that’s okay.:)
