Mom’s Breakfast Club: The Breakfast Squeeze

BlogHer Reviewer Sometimes we sleep in. It’s rare as my oldest son seems to be pre-programed with an inner alarm clock perpetually set for 7:00 in the morning. Sometimes he needs a little extra sleep, however, and it’s usually on a day that we need to be somewhere by a certain time.

Then everything gets a little crazy. Clothes, though laid out ahead of time, are thrown about. I forgo makeup. Voices are a raised and sound a little tense. No one can find shoes, though they are where they’re supposed to be (myself included). And the last thing on my mind is breakfast.

But breakfast must be had.

Cereal is SafeThe good thing is that oatmeal is quick. As are cereals and milk. And toast. I do a lot of toast eating on these days. If it’s really a movie-like morning rush, I burn the toast. And the smoke detector goes off. And somewhere in the back of my mind, I think, “A firefighter’s wife should probably not burn down the house simply by making toast.” And the kids wail that the noise is too loud. And someone spills their milk. And I cry.

Maybe it’s just better if I eat cereal. Less fire.

But soon breakfasts are all eaten — oatmeal, cereal and toast alike. Messes are (kind of) cleaned up. And we’re out the door. Mostly on time.
