We’ve reached an impasse. Nothing is working. With regard to what? Overnight diapering solutions. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. As of this moment, I have washed LittleBrother’s sheets every morning for five straight days. I am worn out simply from the constant wrestling of the toddler bed mattress, sheets fitted tightly to prevent smothering make for difficulty to put them back on once washed. I know something needs to change. There are some things that can’t change, of course.

1. LittleBrother sleeps for twelve to thirteen hours at night. I’m not going to undo that, thank you very much.

2. His output has increased mainly because it is summer and we’re outside more so, of course, he’s drinking more water. As we are not working on overnight potty training, I don’t see a point in limiting his evening drinking. To be fair, he does not have a cup of water with his evening snack (soy yogurt) so it’s not as if we’re filling his bladder fifteen minutes before tucking him in.

Here’s what we were previously using and have also tried in hopes of fixing the problem.

1. Our old foolproof method was a new-style Fuzzi Bunz with a microterry contoured insert by Rainforest Babies, double stuffed with a large hemp JoeyBunz by BabyKicks insert. This used to be a no-questions-asked, always-works method for our family, starting back when BigBrother was wetting through everything at night. I stripped our Fuzzi Bunz in case it was a build-up issue. It is not.

2. We have, on occasion, used a classic organic bamboo velour Goodmama fitted with a Super Doubler and a Good Front covered with a Thirsties cover at night. While Goodmamas are absolutely fine for us during the day, overnight they cause too much moisture next to his skin which, like mine, is intensely sensitive.

3. I broke down and attempted the only brand of disposable diapers that he doesn’t have an allergic reaction to (Pampers) as an option. Nothing going. He still woke up with a wet bed and I feel guilty that we used disposables. Lose-lose on that one.

And so, I’ve been doing some researching.

Well, really, what I did was tweet about it.

I think I’ll blog about this next week but we need a new overnight #clothdiaper solution. LB has apparently upped his output & sleeps 13 hrs.

Not only did I get some answers but I got an offer as well from @sloomb. Thanks to what I can only call fabulous customer service (See! It still exists!), we’re being sent a Sustainable Babyish Organic Bamboo Fleece Fitted diaper (yes, in Sprout) and a wool cover as a hopeful answer to our overnight problems. We will definitely review our experience with this solution (after we lanolize the cover) over on Stop, Drop & Review. We’re hopeful that we’ll be purchasing three more diapers and covers from the company. (As we keep four overnight diapers in rotation.) Cross your fingers!

If this doesn’t work, I’m not sure what we’ll do. FireDad has suggested cutting leg holes in a trash bag and tying it around his waist. (Obviously he is joking. Keep the calls to CPS to a minimum.) And so, the real point of this post is for my readers to offer up some overnight solutions that are currently working for you. (Links would be helpful if they aren’t name brand cloth diapering solutions.)

I am excited to announce our Goodmama Giveaway winner. I am also super proud of myself for closing comments on the post at exactly noon yesterday. I’m always an hour or two behind because I get busy. And forget. It’s like I have kids and deadlines or something. Anyway, I ran the numbers (102 comments/entrants) this morning through random.org and got our winner.

Congratulations to Lucy from Macy Fron! (Seriously? Go look at this post of hers and see the absolute cuteness of the little girl who will be rocking a Fire Crew print in style.) I hope to see pictures of little Greta representing the Fire Family in her winning diaper!

For those of you interested in becoming Goodmama users, as many of you mentioned on the post, I have a few tips.

1. Not sure Goodmama will work for you and thus unsure if you want to spend the money on a brand new one? Go ahead and visit Spot’s Corner and look for some that are in EUC (Excellent Used Condition) or VGUC (Very Good Used Condition). As Goodmama is now an in-stock store, sellers have brought their prices down greatly. Some HTF (Hard to Find) prints are still being sold at prices even I won’t pay but, for the most part, you can get your hands on an OBV (Organic Bamboo Velour) for a very reasonable price.

2. Realize that you get what you pay for… meaning? These are of a great quality.

3. Also realize that these are one size. LittleBrother started in Goodmamas around two-and-a-half months (born at 7lbs, 7oz) and will be able to use them through his diapering career. Perhaps you’re thinking, “So?” Well, as an example, the other brand we use, Fuzzi Bunz, now sells for (not on sale) $17.95. Not being one sized, we have already had to purchase mediums. Eventually, if LittleBrother ever grows, we will have to purchase large. For the three sizes needed, we will actually spend more on Fuzzi Bunz than we will on Goodmamas. Just saying. It’s a great investment.

4. For Goodmamas to be waterproof, they do need a cover. We use Thirsties (though we have not tried the new version) or wool when he’s wearing clothes. Wool is a great investment, let me tell you. We’ve also been known to use fleece covers as well. Some people ask why you’d cover up a cute print like that but, well, why do you wear pants over cute underwear? Furthermore, we’re often coverless and pantsless (with Babylegs on in the winter) around these parts. We don’t find it to be an issue.

5. If you’re interested in winning one of your own diapers, keep an eye on the diaper list over at the official Goodmama photo contest and enter one week. I’d love to see your little one on the Goodmama site!

Thank you all for taking the time to enter, link and tweet about our contest. I’ve enjoyed getting to know some of you and hope that you enjoyed participating. I won’t be giving another Goodmama diaper away before Christmas (oh, budgets!) but I do see another one in the Stop, Drop & Blog future!

The Goodmama has changed up how the photo contest is being run. To win the photo of the week, you now have to submit a photo featuring the chosen diaper of the week. This past week was the first week for said rule. It just so happened that I had the Disco Party diaper in our stash. And so, I threw LittleBrother in a red shirt to bring out the red in the multicolored diaper and we headed outside on a random 80-degree day in October.

I took a billion and one pictures. Or somewhere close to that amount. I brought our Radio Flyer Firetruck ride on. I followed him around the yard. I set him in leaves. I let him climb the ladder on our slide which I didn’t know he could do. (Of note: I also didn’t snap pictures at this point because I was in such shock and holding my hands behind his butt to keep him from falling.) In the end, I strongly considered three photos. Even with the new rules, you can only enter one photo. I really debated between two and just hit it on the fly and entered one.

I entered the third. And it won. Why did I choose it? I really just liked the simplicity of it. Sometimes simple is good. I loved the shots I had with the fire truck because I really thought they added a playfulness to the theme, that boyish kick to rockin’ a pink diaper. But the green against the red and the leaves behind him in the yard. I couldn’t pass it up. Plus? Do you see his eyelashes in this shot? He’s so darn lucky to have his Daddy’s eyelashes. They sure aren’t mine.

And so, through this week, LittleBrother is rockin’ not only the so-called-girly-diaper (total gender neutral, in my opinion!) but he’s also rockin’ the front page of the Goodmama site. I’m very excited and proud. To make things even better, we won a free Goodmama diaper to add to our (uhm, sizable) stash. All of this comes on the heels of the news that I’ve been made the Beginning Photographer Editor (possibly still hiring) over at Picture My Camera. I have absolutely nothing (other than my profile) up over there yet but I’ll let you know when I start handing out tips about getting a start in photography! (I think I’ll be writing my first post on Friday!)

All of that said, here’s the real reason why you clicked on this post: the giveaway. For those who have never been here before, the blog is entitled Stop, Drop and Blog becasue we are a Fire Family. October is National Fire Prevention month. (It’s also time for the quarterly Bloggy Giveaways.) My previous winning photo was of LittleBrother in his Fire Truck switched organic bamboo velour diaper at FireDad’s fire house. And, after many times suggesting, the Goodmama went and created a fire truck print diaper called Fire Crew. It was released in the Boyish and Gender Neutral Bundle (II)… which I didn’t order. But I got my hands on one. And then I got my hands on two. And that’s where you come in. Yes. You! Read on!

I’m giving away one Fire Crew print Goodmama one-size diaper. Free. You don’t even have to pay for shipping. That’s right. I’ve wanted to do this for my readers for some time and I finally have a blog-specific reason to do it! Because we’re a fire family, this is a fire related blog and we’ve got our hands on a fire print diaper. It’s win-win for everyone! And, so, how do you win? Here’s how.

1) Leave ONE comment on this post telling me why you want to win the Fire Crew Goodmama print diaper. Your IP address will be recorded with your comment. We will be watching for IP spoofing and other things of that nature. Optional Entries: You will be allowed up to two extra entries/comments: 2) blog about this giveaway with a link on your own public blog, coming back to leave a comment with the URL to your post and/or 3) tweet about this giveaway and leave the link in another comment with the URL to your tweet on twitter. (While you’re at it, follow me and I’ll follow you back!) And so, in short: one comment about why you’d love to win, one comment with a link to your public blog post about the giveaway, and/or one comment with a link to your twitter URL in which you tweeted about the giveaway. Comment entries will be accepted until October 30, 2008 at 12:00pm. At that point, I will close comments on this post and pick one random winner via random.org. The winner will then be contacted via email. The winner will be announced publicly on the blog on Halloween, the last day of National Fire Prevention Month, to bring the month to a close. (Note: You do not have to blog about the contest or tweet about it on your twitter account. You merely have to comment. The two other options are for extra entries.)

And in case you didn’t know, Goodmama is now an in-stock store. While Fire Crew is not currently in stock, there are a bunch of prints (my current in stock favorite: Blast Off), some regular organic bamboo velours (including some new serging colors though my favorite in stock color remains Bright Blue) and a ton of switched diapers (my current in stock favorite: Fire Truck, of course). You can even pre-order a bundle or a half box. So, if you don’t win, you can still step up and experience the Goodmama life.

Edited: Contest is now closed at 12:00pm on October 30th. Right on the minute. Winner announced tomorrow, October 31st! Stay tuned!

FINE PRINT: Per Goodmama guidelines, your diaper is only under warranty if you purchase directly from the Goodmama. That’s for serging issues, a tag that comes off and other issues like that. However, last I understood, snaps are under warranty for the life of the diaper despite if you are the original purchaser. Everything with the Fire Crew diaper has been checked. It is still New In Package (NIP), only removed from the package for photos. It’s good when it leaves here!

Remember this post when I made the lot of you jealous as I posted pictures highlighting one of our frequent evening trips to the Fire House? (But then I told you how to visit and some of you forgave me.) And remember how someone commented that the first photo was going to win the weekly Goodmama photo contest? (But then I forgot to send in my submission not one but two weeks in a row.) Well, on Saturday night, only because a community post reminded me, I sent in the photo. I figured one of the amazingly talented photographers that just so happen to be Goodmama loyalists would beat me by a mile. Imagine my surprise when I got home from a preschool clothes shopping spree for BigBrother to see this:

That’s right! LittleBrother’s doopa right on Goodmama’s front page! I blinked a few time as my e-mail loaded to show that, sure enough, Suzanne announced the winner’s name. And unless some other woman FireMom took a picture of her almost-nine-month-old in his brand new Fire Truck Switched OBV Goodmama diaper in front of a fire truck wheel, well, I’d assume that I won.

I think this means that this particular photograph needs to be blown up, don’t you? And, quite possibly, framed nicely. Or something snazzy indeed! In fact, if I do get it blown up and framed, I do think this might be the photo that I enter in a local fall art contest. FireDad and I meant to have a personal competition in said contest last year but being pregnant and on bed rest kind of threw that idea out the window. We’ve been talking about it this year but I couldn’t decide which photo to enter. I think I may have found my answer. (See that, FireDad? You better bring it!) Of course, there are a few others that I honestly dig from that session as well. So, even though this photograph has already proven its worth, I’m still debating over a few others. (Mainly this despite cropped head and overexposure.) I think that one is more of a sentimental one for our family and should simply be framed because it is what it is: meaningful to us. Decisions, decisions.

All photography talk aside: I’m darn proud!

I’m also honored to be featured with the rest of this week’s amazing photos all over Goodmama’s site. (I mean, really, check out this page!) I’ve entered a few photos in the past and have always been blown away by past winner’s entries. And, honestly, I can thank those other photographers and the Goodmama herself for hosting such a contest. I’ve learned a lot about photography just by chasing after LittleBrother. (Of note: a Fire House garage does not have the best lighting so go when the light is decent. No gray days!) It’s almost a shame that BigBrother is now fully potty trained (even at night!) and there will be no more dual cloth diaper shots. Almost a shame indeed.

And as I’ve been promising, I have a cloth diapering giveaway coming up. However, it’s going to require your best cloth diapering photo. So be hunting through your own archives. September will surely bring about some good photo contests here on the blog!

And I’ve been mulling it over. I talk about the struggles I have as a mother here, there and just about everywhere. BigBrother won’t nap. He has regressed in various ways in this potty training/learning experience. LittleBrother can’t decide if naps are for good or evil. Sometimes I’m the Screamy Mommy. And I haven’t showered yet this morning… and I don’t know if I have plans to do so.

But there are things I’m proud of in my mothering experience. Surely I can come up with three.

1. I love all of my children equally. Once upon an archived webpage, I had a dramatic e-run-in with another birth mother who said that we, as birth parents, shouldn’t love our relinquished children as much as our parented children. This made my eyes pop out of my head. Without calling her stupid, I told her that her argument didn’t hold much water, at least or especially with me. She was arguing the point from the vantage point of a birth mother who is not actively parenting another child. As one who was at the time and continues to do so, now with more kids under my roof, I can tell you that I do not hold one child over another, no matter where they live, eat or create havoc. And yes, I do take pride in this fact. I love that Munchkin so very much. I am super proud of all of her accomplishments. I would lay down my life to protect her. And I will never be fully able to explain how vast my love is for her. And the same goes for the boys. I marvel at their daily accomplishments and boast about their milestones. I’d throw myself in harm’s way simply to protect them from danger. And I don’t think they’ll understand how much I truly love them. Perhaps I’m unique in this fact but I really don’t think so… but I’m still proud of that unconditional and equal love.

2. I don’t hate being a work-slash-stay at home mom and I don’t feel guilty about leaving the “workforce.” When I was pregnant with BigBrother, I went on and on about how I was going to remain a working mother. I looked down my nose at mothers who chose to stay home. I thought that they lacked ambition and that they were setting a poor example for their children. (Wait! Stop throwing tomatoes! I get my come uppance in a second! Keep reading!) Then BigBrother was born and my world was turned upside down. I went back to work and hated every moment of it. Okay, not every moment. I loved the thrill of the live newscast. And that one time that I wore BigBrother in a front carrier while switching a live newscast? Yes, that was a good moment. (See photo.) But the other moments sucked. When he neared eight months old and was crawling, babbling and hitting a million milestones per day, I ate crow, turned in my two weeks notice and came on home with my tail between my legs. And oh, being home, whether I’m just mothering for an entire day or throwing in one of my many freelancing jobs into the mix, is a million times harder than I ever thought it would be. So, while I’m not so proud of the judgment that I previously tossed at mothers who stay home, I am proud of the fact that I am thriving in my role as a stay-slash-work at home mom and enjoying almost every minute of it. (Really? Did I mention that BigBrother peed on my lap last week? Not my favorite moment.)

3. I am not too scared OR too proud to try new things. I am constantly learning about this parenting thing. I am the first to admit that I am mostly flying by the seat of my pants. But I am proud of the fact that I don’t really ever let “good enough” become my motto. Right now, for example, I’m reading books on positive discipline so that I might be a better guide for my (strong-willed) two year old and, eventually, his little brother. And if those things don’t work for LittleBrother like they are with BigBrother, well, I’ll read some more books. The biggest examples of this, of course, are in the few changes we made on initial things done with BigBrother to how we did the variations of those things with LittleBrother. For those who don’t know, BigBrother was not breastfed. (No throwing stones. There were reasons and they were worked out in therapy. Thank you.) LittleBrother will hit the six month milestone of exclusive breastfeeding on the 24th of this month! Furthermore, BigBrother wasn’t cloth diapered until night-time at around 18 months of age. I thought it would be too much work. Pfft. I got schooled on that one, didn’t I? And as such, LittleBrother started out in cloth from the get-go. I learn from everything I do as a parent, whether it’s something I perceive as a mistake, something that I could simply have done better or something I did pretty darn awesome that I’d like to repeat in the future. Even better, I constantly learn from my Mom-friends. I am (usually?) not offended when someone offers up advice. I ask a lot of questions (really, I do). And I constantly push myself to be the best mom I can be… which involves going back to the drawing board at times and starting over. And that’s okay.

I’m proud of a lot more. Really. I am. I’m not bragging. But darn it, I’m a great Mom in so many different ways. Sometimes I fail. Sometimes I have bad days. (Weeks. Months?) But my children are all thriving in age appropriate ways. And I love watching them all experience new things in their lives.

And, there you have it. What are YOU proud of?

I used to write these monthly on our prior family blog. It’s taken awhile to build up some search strings that lead people to Stop, Drop and Blog. We finally have quite a few and I thought I’d write about some of them today!

1. Strangely, the thing that leads most people to our site is a google for our blog’s name in some form or fashion. I find that amusing since the URL of our blog isn’t hard to remember. It’s simply stopdropandblog.com. I’m easy like that.

2. Postpartum weight loss is the next most popular search, in various terms. Some variations are “lost 25 pounds two weeks postpartum,” “plateau postpartum,” and “weight comes off slowly at first.” Let me tell you googling, overtired, emotional, hormonal postpartum mommies: every pregnancy is different and, as such, every postpartum healing period is different. That said, I know if you’re googling for something like that, you’re looking for some support. And so, here’s some support: it will come off. It may come off immediately, like it did after my first. It may take a full year, like it did after my second. You may lose all of the weight in three months but still not be the same shape as you were before, like after my third full-term pregnancy. And that’s where I am now. Having lost the weight but not the size. I’m learning to be okay with that and dress in creative ways to hide some of that shape-shifting that happened with this last pregnancy. (I have a post coming about that later this week!) But don’t get down on yourselves, mamas. Just trust me.

3. We then have a whole bunch of varied queries about tongue ties, the procedure for surgery (frenotomy), how it screws both breastfeeding and speech and so on. So, here’s a quick recap: tongue ties make breastfeeding suck. It totally screws the latch and if you don’t get it taken care of early, you run the risk of things more painful than shredded nipples. Due to the fact that the baby can’t properly drain the milk because of the tongue tie, you’re at a greater risk for plugged ducts (we only had two) and mastitis (we lucked out here, knock on wood). Also, if you wait too long to consider the procedure, the lingual frenulum can get too thick and your child may need anesthesia. Ask sooner than later. Sadly, when many mothers inquire with their normal pediatrician, they are told that it won’t help breastfeeding. And are told to just wait it out. That’s a blatant lie, mama. The relief was immediate. That said, many mamas and babies do have to relearn latching after a frenotomy so a week of patience is necessary. Lastly, if your doctor doesn’t want to do a thing about it, politely ask for a referral to a pediatric Ear, Nose and Throat doctor in a larger city. Just say you’re covering all of your bases.

4. Then we’ve got all kinds of search strings about cloth diapers, mainly Fuzzi Bunz, laundry detergent choices and Goodmama diapers. I do have a full on post about Goodmamas coming in the near future but I’ll give you a brief update about our current State of Cloth Diapering in the FireHouse. We’re still loving the cloth. Totally loving. We mainly use Fuzzi Bunz for their ease of use (read: FireDad has no problems) and their sizing. (Each size lasts the baby quite awhile.) We are still using the same washing routine as I previously mentioned: baking soda, Purex Free & Clear, a squirt or two of original Dawn and a cap full of Calgon for our hard water. (For more info on the actual routine, read this post.) We still have had no repelling issues, no staining and very few leaks. Leaks have come from too long in a diaper (church service, for example) and so for overnights and longer times in a diaper (a car ride back to The Farm or church), we’re double stuffing our pockets. (I’ve got more information coming in the soon-to-be post about our preferences on inserts.) As for what else we’re using? We’ve branched into one-size fitteds with covers. (Yes, the previously mentioned and now much-loved Goodmamas as well as a few others.) Stay tuned for that!

5. A bunch of searches for potty training help. Trust me. I’m no help. But pick up the No Cry Potty Training Solution (Pantley). We’re just starting to implement a few things but we’re still a long ways away from any “success.” Best of luck to you!

6. A bunch more searches for breastfeeding, postpartum weight loss and the infamous bridesmaid gown. To be honest? I haven’t been fitted yet. However, I did recently find a strapless nursing bra at La Leche League’s online store. I don’t know how to modify a bridesmaid dress for breastfeeding and haven’t yet figured out how to handle any of this. Here’s hoping we can get through the ceremony and just deal with the rest as it comes.

7. “Poop filled diapers.” Well, diapers are meant for poop. Yes. Not sure why that is search worthy.

8. “My wife cut off her long hair today.” Good for her, buddy. It’s her hair. And if she’s got any kids, it’s probably hard to find time to do any hair, let alone longer hair. I hope she loves it. I love mine. Kind of. (I did recently find a way to help with the half-mullet phase. Barrettes. Yes, the kind you wore in elementary school. More later.)

9. “What to write in a card for a friend’s mom who was diagnosed with breast cancer.” That’s a long and heart-breaking search string. I got a few cards when Mom was diagnosed. I cherished them all. No, the disease was not mine. I didn’t undergo radiation. I didn’t have the multiple surgeries. But I was scared out of my mind. It was my mommy. And so the cards I got meant the world to me. They were mostly sent from other daughters whose mothers had been diagnosed with various forms of cancer and who just “got” the emotions I was experiencing. So, for those wondering what to say, my advice? Just be supportive. Most likely, your friend is going through some strange emotions and trying to determine how all of this makes her feel. Some may be angry. (I was at one point.) Scared. (Yep, that, too.) And maybe reliving every bad thing she ever said or did to her mother. (Mmmhmm!) Simply saying, “I’m thinking of and praying for you as well as your entire family goes through this ordeal,” means a whole lot. Trust me!

10. “Babywearing when to stop.” Not sure why you’d want to stop! Ever! That said, always check with your sling manufacturers. Some are only okay to a certain weight. If you have a work-at-home-mom made ring sling, check and see if she uses Sling Rings. They are tested for up to 250 pounds. Not that I could carry that much weight myself but that’s reassuring. One shoulder carries (ring slings, pouches) can start to feel uncomfortable as your little one gains weight. Consider a carrier that evenly distributes weight like a Mei Tai or a soft-structured carrier like an Ergo. And always check your carriers for safety. Look for loose stitching in important places and any rips or tears. Otherwise, wear that kid until they simply refuse to be worn anymore. You’ll miss it when it’s all said and done.

And so, my friends, that concludes our first installment of “Sorry You Found This Place” on Stop, Drop and Blog. I’ve let you know about some upcoming posts this week and next. I should also let you know that I’ve got a bunch of reviews lined up for Modern Mamma Marvels that start tomorrow morning and also run through next week. You know, because life isn’t busy enough for me or something.

Happy Googling!

I’ve been getting some messages from various awesome Mamas asking, “So, how is cloth diapering going?” I haven’t written about our experiences yet, almost expecting something to go wrong. But to be honest, nothing has gone wrong. (Of note: I just knocked on wood.) So, let me set you up with our setup.

We’re exclusively using Fuzzi Bunz (though I did just jump on the Goodmama bandwagon and order one and a few small Thirsties covers; I’ll review those soon). We waited to put LittleBrother in cloth until we were home from the hospital and all of the meconium had passed. For those who don’t know, meconium is some nasty, tarry like poo that would basically ruin the nice, stainless fleece of cloth. Once that phase was over, we moved him into his cloth.

Small Fuzzi Bunz said that they were good for seven pounds and up. To be honest, I was worried about the transition. You see, LittleBrother was born with FirDad’s legs: skinny, skinny. No thighs at all! When I first strapped him into his first cloth diaper, I was one-hundred percent sure that anything coming out of him was also coming out of the leg hole of the diaper. I was pleasantly surprised. Everything stayed where it was supposed to stay. I was stoked.

You see, even when BigBrother was a newborn, he peed through disposable diapers. Some times it was a size issue, his green parents not knowing when to move up a size. Other times? Well, it goes back to the reason that we moved BigBrother to cloth at night: he pees a lot and pretty darn hard. Disposables couldn’t keep up with him. From the time he was very little, I was washing sheets with ridiculous regularity. Not so with LittleBrother and cloth diapers and, trust me, he can pee just as much and just as hard.

So, now everyone wants to know: what about washing?

It should be noted that LittleBrother is exclusively breastfed. Breastfed poop is something special! All you need to know is that it is water soluble. And so, my washing routine goes something like this: twenty minute cold soak cycle with some baking soda followed by a hot wash cycle (with cold rinse). During the hot wash cycle, I use about half of the recommended Purex Free & Clear for a large load, a capful of Calgon Water Softener because we have very hard water and a few squirts of Dawn Original Dish Soap. (More about cloth diapers and detergent here.) If I’m thinking that the load was exceptionally dirty, I will do another wash cycle on cold after that one is finished. Then, since it’s winter and drying outside isn’t possible, everything gets thrown into the dryer on low. And everything comes out clean. We’ve had one stain stay after a hot wash. Thankfully, it was a random sunny and warm day. I put it out on the back deck with a little bit of lemon juice on the stain and “sunned it out.” It was fine after that!

Of note: We have twenty-seven diapers. (Soon to be twenty-nine.) I was washing every day because I was panicked about running out of diapers. I’ve slowly worked myself into an every-other-day routine. Washing every other day is easier on the diapers but makes stains a concern. I always make sure to check for staining before I toss diapers in the dryer. (Drying a diaper that has a stain will set the stain. Always check first!) Still, washing every-other-day for over two weeks now, we have only had one diaper that needed to be washed a second time. I think we’re doing just fine!

And then everyone wants to know: Do you always use cloth?

Yes. I don’t even know what size LittleBrother would wear in disposables now. It’s much easier just to throw the diapers and a wetbag in the diaper bag and go. I even used them when we got snowed in on TheFarm over New Years. I just simply ran them through the wash at my Mom’s and, voila!, everything was good. (Of note: she now keeps some Calgon and some Dawn on hand for me.)

Obviously, cloth diapering may not work for everyone. We’re lucky in the fact that I work from home. We’re also lucky in the fact that FireDad is not phased by poop, pee or cloth. When he saw how well cloth worked for containing BigBrother’s pee issue, he got right on board. The Grandmas have been quick to learn how to change a cloth diaper and the Great-Grandmas are impressed at the advances made in cloth diapering since their day. (Speaking of advances, check out this article in Time!)

Not only are we saving money by going the cloth route, we’re also doing something good for the environment. And, quite frankly, with our gas-guzzling SUV, it probably wouldn’t hurt for us to do something nice for the Earth. Oops.

If you’re interested in cloth diapering, don’t hesitate to ask me a question. I also can’t say enough about DiaperSwappers.com as a great place to get information as well as find diapers or diapering accessories at greatly reduced price.
