We’re kind of strict about bedtimes around here. We’ve been having enough issue figuring out what new time BigBrother should go to bed, having outgrown his previous bedtime. We don’t have a later summer bedtime; the boys go to bed when it’s light out during the summer because we’re mean, mean parents. But they’re happy, well-rested kids and we’re happy, kind-of-rested adults.

But sometimes rules are meant to be broken.

Our county fair is going on this week. We didn’t go last year as LittleBrother was too short to ride the rides and it seemed somewhat cruel to make him sit and watch his brother have a blast. I had to take some photos last night, so we took the whole family out for fair food (mmm), the parade and some rides.

We didn’t leave the fair until an hour after BigBrother’s new attempted bedtime. That means that LittleBrother was well past his own bedtime. And very tired. He threw a screaming fit upon being buckled into his car seat, upset that his ice cream cone was finished. He was simply exhausted. Today he slept until 9:30, well past his normal wake up time. Our schedule and his mood have been thrown for a loop.

But I have to say: the schedule and mood woes are worth it.

You would think that we went to Disney World. They were so happy. Overtired. Kind of grumpy today. But they still think last night was the Best Night Ever. They keep talking about the fun, the lights, the rides and a general love of all things Fair.

They’ll go to bed at a normal time tonight, but I’m so glad we stayed out late last night.
