I kind of had a heroic weekend. (And no, it wasn’t me.)
On Friday, in the midst of a tornado warning and crazy lightning, I found myself in front of our courthouse, meeting James “Spudd” Sasak. I wrote about the experience over at the Ohio Moms Blog but, in short, he’s riding all around the state of Ohio for, as he puts it, “Ohio’s greatest athletes,” our Special Olympians.

On Sunday, I attended the Southeastern Ohio Fire & EMS Expo and witnessed the helicopter landings of both STAT MedEvac 1 out of Washington, PA and MedFlight from here in Ohio. Watching the crews open their respective doors and climb out gave me the tinglies. I felt like there should be Top Gun type music playing in the background. Perhaps there was, if only in my head.

Sometimes I feel like a kid when I stand in awe of people who do things that I could never do. I can do a fundraiser for March of Dimes to benefit those smallest of children who desperately need our help. But if they asked me to ride a bicycle across the state? I’d laugh. Thanfully Spudd has a tornado bell on his bike but, still, let’s face it. I may be training for a 5K but I’m never going to ride a bike over 1,000 miles. Ever. In my whole life. I don’t even own a bike. The fact that Spudd would take on such a physical test of endurance because he had a friend who moved him is heroic times twelve.
And the helicopter? I prefer to stand on the ground and take pictures of the thing landing. In fact, I prefer to use my 200 lens and stand far enough away from the landing helicopter that I’m not endangering myself. One person standing next to me as MedEvac 1 landed said, “If that thing starts to spin, I’m out of here.” I already had one foot facing in the opposite direction.
There are things that I cannot do in this lifetime. I am always so pleased and moved when others step up to do them and are wonderful and friendly conversationalists. I not only enjoyed my moments of awe this weekend but I enjoyed talking with these people who obviously have a passion for what they do.
That, the passion, is what makes a true hero.

I’ve told you before how I view FireDad as one of my heroes. I’ve written about how he was
